The six postgraduate students from different disciplines and universities in Norway are highly motivated in the assignment they have received from Yara this summer. And they have great confidence in developing a product that Yara can utilise.
Working cross-functionally
Merete Østby, Digital Manager, and Lene Grønlid Knutsen, HR Business Partner at Yara Porsgrunn, spoke about the Summer Project 2023 in April. It is a project where six postgraduate students collaborate across disciplines to create a digital solution that can help Yara improve energy efficiency in fertiliser production.
Collaboration most exciting aspect
The students have been working intensively for three weeks and have visited all of Yara's plants.
They believe that the most exciting part has been collaborating in a cross-functional group, learning from others, and getting to know Yara.
"We have achieved the initial data collection phase, and after the holiday break, we will focus on sorting and refining," says the student group, who will take a few weeks of summer leave.
Striving for a great product
The student group has divided the tasks among themselves. Bendik A. Dale and Nora Aasland have taken primary responsibility for data mapping. Anders Rudolfsen and Shania Muganga are responsible for coding and visualisation. Martin Færøvik Hamre and Runhild Aakre handle the report and progress and providing assistance where necessary.
Everyone hopes to produce an excellent product and is excited about the 10th of August when the students will present the solution to Yara.
A total of 18 students at Yara this summer
There are a total of 18 summer interns at Yara in Porsgrunn this year. Five students come from universities in Germany, Venezuela, India, and Sri Lanka, while 13 of them come from various universities in Norway.
The students are working on different projects and assignments. Eleven students are working at Yara Porsgrunn's production plants, and seven are based at Yara's Technology Centre in Forskningsparken.
In the internship, students will have the opportunity to put their academic knowledge into practice by engaging in meaningful tasks, enabling them to offer the company fresh perspectives and valuable insight on current challenges.
