The industrial park company has now commenced a major project to upgrade the infrastructure in the area surrounding Gate C and Gate 24. This is the location where the former storage facilities for coke and dolomite were situated.

The project includes the installation of a new raw water pipeline, a new stormwater and cooling water system, as well as upgrades to roads with new asphalt surfaces and modern street lighting.

Groundworks and new infrastructure

The project involves complete replacement of ground materials down to 1.0 metre below surface level.

"We will be rehabilitating the raw water and stormwater systems. This includes the removal of old chambers and pipelines, installation of new pipes, chambers and drains, and upgrading parts of the existing infrastructure," explains Geir Halvor Haugen, project manager at Herøya Industripark AS.

The stormwater system will be positioned outside the carriageway on the shoulder, and the project also aims to place chambers with local slope outside the driving lanes.

"We will also carry out excavation and establish new trenches for electrical cables, ducts and draw pits (TK1). Along Gate C, we will install new foundations for modern street lighting, and the lighting on the pipe bridge at Gate 24 will also be upgraded," adds Haugen.

Strengthening the road structure

The new road will be designed to withstand a 20-tonne axle load, providing greater durability and improved access for logistics in the area.

"This is an important upgrade of the area’s infrastructure, which will ensure a more robust road network to support logistics operations, while also providing improved water supply and more efficient stormwater management."

In total, approximately 2,200 square metres of road surface will be upgraded.
