This week, Nel has been awarded up to €135 million, or 1,6 NOKs, from the EU's Innovation Fund to industrialise the next generation of pressurised electrolyser technology. The technology is currently at the pilot stage, with plans for industrialisation linked to the Herøya site. This was announced by Nel in a press release.

Potential development at Herøya
The first phase of development is planned with an annual capacity of 1-2 GW. The support will be combined with Nel’s own investments to enable a capacity of up to 4 GW for pressurised electrolyser equipment. A final investment decision on whether to begin development will depend on the successful testing of the prototype and the planned pilot phase, as well as market acceptance of the new technology.
Strengthening the region's position
“We are very pleased that the EU is supporting the industry at Herøya and in the region,” says Sverre Gotaas, CEO of Herøya Industrial Park AS.
“This demonstrates that we are at the forefront of developing new, sustainable technologies, and it strengthens the region’s position as a hub for green industry. The support from the EU’s Innovation Fund is not only a recognition of Nel’s work but also an important investment in future growth and value creation for the entire region."
