Petroleum and Energy Minister visits Statoil at Herøya Industripark

“We had a fantastic day in Grenland and met many enthusiastic and committed professionals.” So says Petroleum and Energy Minister Tord Lien, following a visit to Gassnova, Statoil and Norcem on his trip to Grenland today.

The aim of the trip was to get to know some of the skills environments which are working on carbon capture in connection with the Government’s development of a new strategy for carbon capture and storage. Deputy Minister Kåre Fostervold from Porsgrunn was also present.

“We started with our home company, Gassnova, which is responsible for operational activities. Then we visited Statoil in Herøya Industrial Park and were given an engrossing presentation and tour of Statoil’s test plant,” Lien recalls.

The last stop on the day’s programme was Norcem in Brevik, where a large research project on carbon capture is due to be rolled out. Over a three year period, Norcem will test four different capture methods, within a cost frame of NOK 93 million.

“It is important to get out and talk to the people working on this, and it is enormously interesting to see the culture they have for meeting industrial challenges,” the Petroleum and Energy Minister remarks.

He is in no doubt that the skills environments in Grenland will have an important contribution to the further work on carbon capture and storage. “When it comes to selecting research projects of a certain size, it’s too early to comment on these,” Lien underlines.
